6 Things To Consider When Getting A Conversation Set

1. How many people will I need to seat?

   Do you see your guests as people only interested in light small talk, or are your friends ones who engage in deep-seated discussion?I ask because people who are just interested in chatting may not be seated for long.  On the other hand, if you enjoy having company over, especially if you haven’t seen them for a while, you might want to accommodate as many seated guests as possible.

2. What material should it be made from? (And…is it suitable for outdoors?)

   You might be wondering why I brought up if a potential set is suitable for outdoors. As you’ll soon find out, some materials handle rough weather better than others.There are a number of materials that are used to make patio furniture, such as plastic, aluminum, wrought iron, wicker, teak, and cast aluminum.I think that, for conversation sets, teak (which is a type of wood), wrought iron, and wicker are probably the best materials to go with.

   Teak hardwood furniture tends to do very well outdoors.  It’s very beautiful, too.  And, out of all the possible materials, teak is most likely the one that can handle the rough elements of nature: rain, cold, heat, and humidity. It can also be the most expensive.

   Wrought iron furniture, like teak, is also in the higher-priced range.  It’s usually very tough, and has a grain that resembles wood.  When considering this type of iron, be sure to find out if it has a powdered protective coating, as opposed to just the paint that’s used on some metals.  Metal furniture paint may help protect wrought iron, but powdered coating is better.  The power helps form a thicker layer of protection.

   One interesting thing about wrought iron is that even though it’s historically been used for all kinds of furniture, today, what we refer to as wrought iron isn’t really wrought iron–at least, not in the US.  I found that out on Wikipedia.

   Wicker furniture is a good choice for your patio, because it’s light, yet woven nature gives it good durability.  On the price range of outdoor furniture materials where plastic is the cheapest and teak is the most expensive, wicker is usually in between.

   One thing to keep in mind is that some people aren’t sure if wicker can handle the rough weather.  It doesn’t help that some furniture manufacturers don’t make this very clear.  Yes, some wicker items either naturally withstand the elements, or can be treated to do so.  Be sure to ask if the wicker items you’re considering can handle the weather in your area.

3. What have others said?

   Amazon.com is an example of a site that welcomes customer feedback.  If you’re considering a certain set, but don’t see a lot of customer feedback for it, see if you can find customer feedback on other items by the same manufacturer.  If the general feeling you get for 3 items by the same maker is that they make quality products, you can feel safe in ordering your item.

4. Warranty

   Is the furniture guaranteed to be free of manufacturer’s defects for one year, including shipping?  What other assurances do they have?

5. Maintenance

   Is your new furniture going to be easy to set up?  What about cleaning?  Is it easy to get replacement parts, such as cushions?

6. Ordering Safety

   Of course, Amazon.com is a safe vendor to order from.  Google and the other search engines do their best to make sure you don’t land on bad sites that try to steal your information.  Always click on security and verification seals to verify that the site you’re on has a good reputation.  Also, when you’re on a secure page, the address displayed in your browser’s address bar will begin with https The s is critical.
